The word Langkawi is a marriage of two words, Lang, meaning a brown eagle and Kawi, a local manganese stone. You can catch the elusive eagles soaring in the skies of Langkawi and you will find a giant monument of this eagle welcoming visitors to the island by the Kuah jetty.

Langkawi holds an unrivalled richness in history as old as age itself. It is filled with geological wonders of mystifying caves, mystical fairy lakes and mysterious misty-laden mountains. Geography
Langkawi is situated off the northwestern coast of Peninsula Malaysia. It is about 30km from Kuala Perlis and 51km from Kuala Kedah. It is an island so rich in folklores and legends. Langkawi is well known for its unspoilt beauty, flora and faunas. Amazing centuries-old cave and rock formations are a hidden treasure for cave dwellers. It has been accredited as the first South East Asia Geopark by UNESCO in June 2007.
 
Climate
For those who have a passion for great sunny weather, Langkawi's equatorial weather is a blessing. With a high annual temperature between 24'C to 33'C. There is the dry season between November and March where you could enjoy outdoor activities by the sea and then the wet season around April. But April showers are brief and fast and comes and goes. The heavier rainfall averages about 2500mm when the monsoon tropical season comes about.
 
People
Langkawi is a melting pot society with a population of about 60,000. The islanders are well known for their hospitality, friendliness and helpfulness. Many foreigners who have had a taste of Langkawi hospitality and lifestyle, have fallen in love with this place and chosen to come back repeatedly or make it their second home, if not the first.
